If you're interested, the hangout is embedded below.

#edcamp Organizer GHO

I got to hang out with a whole crew of really awesome edcamp organizers tonight. We chatted about what makes edcamp special, the necessity (or lack thereof) of sponsors and swag at edcamps, and answered some questions from folks tuning in submitted via the Twitter-sphere.

As always, edcamps draw the best of education to them. edcamp organizers are some of my favorite people in the world. Any excuse to chat with them is always awesome, and tonight was no exception. The Storify of the event is linked here. The GHO is embedded below.

#edcamp Organizer GHO

I had the honor of being part of a Google hangout of veteran edcamp organizers tonight and it was a blast. It's always great to get to talk edcamp, and the conversation with Kristen Swanson, Shannon Montague, Alice Barr, Debby Jacoby, and Peter Strawn lived up to expectations. We chatted about tips and tricks for new edcamp organizers and also talked about how to make sure that conversations at edcamps are focused on innovative pedagogy. The Storify of the Twitter backchannel chat for the hangout is linked here. The actual GHO is embedded below.

EduSlam: How To Get Chromebooks for Your Classroom

I got to film an #EduSlam with Tanya Avrith and Holly Clark about how I went 1:1 Chromebooks in my classroom. The link to their write-up is here.

Hint: the devices didn't come from my district. Through my awesome friends, family, former students, and parents of students and former students I was able to raise about $8000 through Donors Choose to get every student in my class a Chromebook.

The moral of the story: go out and do it. There is money out there. People want to support education. And those devices? They've changed what a history class can be in my room!

Thanks for having me on, Tanya and Holly!

20% Time GHO

I got to do a GHO with Kevin Brookhouser and Chris Cooper tonight about 20% time. We chatted about starting 20% time, reluctant learners, and the Bad Idea Factory. Among other things. Plus, we conned Chris into getting back onto Twitter. Sounds like this might become a regular thing, which would be really exciting. The conversation is embedded below.

History #flipclass Teachers Unite (Again)

It had been about a month. It was time for the batsignal. We needed a #flipclass history teachers hangout. Luckily, Kaelyn Bullock started asking good questions about what a flipped inquiry history class would look like. And just like that, the batsignal was sent. The conversation is embedded below.

Kaizena Launch on Teachercast

I had the privilege of being a part of the launch of the updated 121writing feedback tool (formerly Voice Comments, renamed Kaizena) on Teachercast last night. Sam Patterson, an early supporter of the 121 writing gang, put together a #patue chat on feedback to coincide with the launch of Kaizena.

I've written about using this product before: it allows me to write better - and more - feedback to my students, and in less time. I really dig the update the guys have put together: the comments are highlighted on the Google doc directly - as opposed to being highlighted only as you play the feedback. Additionally, written, verbal, and video feedback can now be left as a comment. Kaizena also associates feedback tags - like 'comma splice' for example - with videos you have used to explain what comma splices are, another time saver.

I've only gotten a little bit of time to mess around with the new update, but I'm psyched about Kaizena and the improvements this product has made! Want to know more? Check out the video Jen Roberts made describing how to use Kaizena here. Our Google hangout - which aired on Teachercast last night - is also embedded below.

Happy feedbacking!

rebootED Podcast: edcampHome

I got to chat about edcampHome this afternoon on the rebootED podcast this afternoon with David Theriault, Andrew Schwab, and Mike Vollmert. It was neat to get to go back and chat with David about the day (though I'm bummed Kelly and Shawn couldn't make it). A highlight for me was the second part of the podcast that went into our current PD model - which I think the four of us all agreed is broken - and how PD might get fixed. Interesting stuff!

Thanks to Andrew and Mike for having us on!

History #flipclass Google Hangout

I had the privilege of chatting with Kaelyn Bullock, Tom Driscoll, David Fouch, and Liz Ramos about flipping history classes. We chatted about how we start our year with students, how we introduce flipped learning to parents, inquiry-based history class, and the one big change that we're making this year in our classrooms.

Some interesting commonalities popped up. People are planning to do the Marshmallow Challenge, showing the lone nut leadership video, and in the work of the Stanford History Education Group. I guess it's not a huge surprise when you've got a bunch of history teachers sharing best practices that there would be some commonalities - figured it'd be worth sharing and linking them here.

The archived Google hangout is embedded below.

#flipclass and Google Tools

I got to chat with with Todd Nesloney and Jason Bretzmann about a week ago via the good old Google Hangout. We chatted about what Google tools we are utilizing in our flipped classrooms - Todd in his fifth grade class and me with ninth and tenth graders. Jason was running the conference, so he unfortunately didn't get a chance to share.

History #flipclass Discussion

I got to hang out with Jason Bretzmann, David Fouch, and Tom Driscoll on a Google+ hangout tonight and chat about flipped history classes. The conversation ran a little long - not the worst thing in the world. We chatted about summer PD, what we'd learned this summer and would be taking into our classroom in the fall, and what changes we saw making for the next school year.

I live demo'ed Voice Comments for the gentlemen. We ended with our summer beer highlights. Hope you enjoy!

History #flipclass Discussion

I was lucky enough to get to hang out on Google+ tonight with David Fouch and Tom Driscoll and talk about what the early year in a flipped history class has looked like for us. We also talked a bit about what flipped-mastery looks like in our classrooms. Some cool ideas and questions came out of this discussion. Check it out below!
